Why a Ministry to Uganda?
Gulu, Uganda is located in East Africa. Gulu Town is situated in the northern part of the country. Northern Uganda is often referred to as backward, and its effort to make an uphill trend of development and progress in all sectors has been hampered, mainly due to lack of attention, and in particular to civil strife. For almost 20 years, a rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has been waging war against the Ugandan government and carrying out horrific attacks on villages, towns and camps for the internally displaced. The group's modus operandi is to abduct thousands of children, forcing them to fight, carry supplies and serve as sex slaves to LRA commanders. The children of Gulu Town, Uganda have been tragically impacted by this war. The insurgency in the North has resulted in the destruction of people's lives, as well as in the physical infrastructure such as schools, roads, and health centers. There is a pressing need for more schools to absorb the displaced children from the rural areas and to support the disadvantaged children arising from these deplorable conditions. Illiteracy is at an extremely high level. Household poverty is very acute. The AIDS pandemic, along with the prevailing insurgency, has led to increased numbers of orphans in the area. And with the prolonged war touching everyone in the communities, there is massive displacement, destruction of homes and property, maiming and loss of lives, and an ever-growing population of largely traumatized citizens, especially the children. The UN adviser, Jan Egeland called the situation in Uganda "the world's most neglected humanitarian crisis." Education is the key to healing and developing this region of the world. We are compelled to do what we can to bring hope and love to these neglected people and invite you to join us in this vital ministry.
"Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and should give generously to those in need, always being ready to share with others whatever God has given them."
1 Timothy 6:18 (New Living Translation)
UNIFAT
Buckhead Community Fellowship has adopted a school in Gulu Town, Uganda called the Upper Nile Institute for Appropriate Technology (UNIFAT). We are partnering with UNIFAT specifically because of its track record of extending assistance to orphans and needy children through sponsorship and scholarship programs. The UNIFAT campus is located on approximately 7.5 acres. The school has been partially built, but is in dire need of completion, as the classrooms are terribly overcrowded. The school lacks basic scholastic materials such as textbooks for both teachers and students, stationery, and teaching guides. There are inadequate desks, tables, and chairs. Doors are missing from doorways and glass from windows. UNIFAT would like to complete the construction of the school by adding more classrooms, building a kitchen and dining hall, building a library, and adding a school dispensary. Other immediate needs are for books, school supplies, computers, and musical instruments.
Our Goal
The goal of this ministry is to build upon a newly established relationship with the people of Gulu Town, Uganda by helping them complete the partially built, 1,500 student elementary school and raise funds to purchase and erect a fence to surround its acreage.
